GOOD DOG MANNERS & OBEDIENCE – SMALL GROUP CLASS (Maximum 6 Students)

Small Group Classes are a client favorite! They provide a fun and productive learning environment and are especially beneficial for puppies, anxious dogs, and people seeking more individual attention than most group classes offer.

Next Class: April 14 - May 19, 2024 (THIS CLASS IS FULL) (Classes will be held every Sunday for 6 consecutive weeks)

2:00pm – 3:00pm

Program Overview: This six-week class teaches and your dog skills such as Leash Walking, Sit, Down, Stay, Come, Wait, Up, Off, Leave it, and Watch. The class also instructs owners on how to achieve good household manners and address common puppy behaviors such as jumping and nipping. This class is a great forum for socializing your dog in a controlled environment with novel situations, people, and other dogs.

Prerequisite:  Dogs must be fully vaccinated and over 4 months of age.

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN (CGC) & THERAPY DOG PREP GROUP CLASS

Next Class: May 26 - June 16, 2024 (Classes will be held every Sunday for 4 consecutive weeks)

2:00pm – 3:00pm (Class 4 will last longer to complete tests)

Program Overview:  This 4-week program will provide training for you and your dog to master the skills and animal behavior needed to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen test and prepare for therapy dog work. The first 3 sessions focus on teaching your dog to behave appropriately at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs and people. The fourth session is dedicated to testing your dog for the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate.

In addition to instructing your dog on good manners and proper behavior, a Canine Good Citizen certification is a prerequisite for many therapy dog certifications and is a great step toward advanced service dogs and dog sports educational programs.

  • Teaches practical manners for Pet Dogs to be better behaved around people and other dogs.

  • Improves public access competencies for Service Dogs (SD’s in training or those needing a refresher).

  • Teaches mandatory skills for dogs being prepared to become Therapy Dogs.

  • Beneficial for dogs getting ready to compete in Dog Sports.

 Program Details:  The first three weeks consist of learning and practicing the 10 requisite skills in the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program:

  1. Accepting a friendly stranger

  2. Sitting politely for petting

  3. Appearance and grooming

  4. Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)

  5. Walking through a crowd

  6. Sit and down on command and staying in place

  7. Coming when called

  8. Reaction to another dog

  9. Reaction to distraction

  10. Supervised separation

In the fourth week, you will have the option for your dog to be tested for the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Certificate. Owners of dogs passing all 10 skills above will receive an approved test form.  This form, and a processing fee of $20, must then be submitted by the owner to the AKC to receive the Canine Good Citizen Certificate.

BK9 PUBLIC ACCESS CLINIC

This is a group learning experience in which you will advance your handling skills and your dogs behaviors in real-world settings.  The group is limited to six participants so I can provide flexibility, personalized coaching, and interventions as needed to maximize the benefits of our time together. All outing venues are dog friendly.

  • Learn how to Increase your dogs attentiveness and responsiveness amidst distractions

  • Increase confidence and composure to manage public access and other challenging situations

  • Learn how to read dogs common stress/arousal signals and techniques to prevent or manage them
